THE CHAIN OF CUSTODY

In addition to forest management certification, FSC® also offers certification for companies processing certified materials throughout each stage of transformation. This is known as Chain of Custody certification, allowing companies to produce and market items under the FSC® label.

PRINCIPLES UPHELD IN FSC® FOREST MANAGEMENT

In an FSC® certified forest, management practices adhere to the following core Principles and Criteria:

• Compliance with local and national laws, and international conventions and agreements.

• Respect for land ownership and rights of use concerning forest resources.

• Recognition and protection of the rights of indigenous peoples who rely on the forest

• Respect for workers' and local communities’ rights (including job security, and economic and social well-being).

• Promotion of the efficient use of the products and environmental and social benefits that forests provide.

• Conservation of biodiversity, protection of landscapes, ecological balance, stability, and forest integrity.

• Implementation of a forest management plan tailored to the scale and intensity of the activities, with clear long-term objectives.

• Ongoing monitoring and evaluation of forest areas, management activities, and impacts.

• Safeguarding forests of high ecological, naturalistic or cultural value with significant protective functions.

• Management of forest plantations in line with the above principles, helping reduce pressure on natural forests and supporting their preservation.

Holzhof has chosen PEFC certification as a symbol of eco-sustainability, a valuable tool for companies working with wood who want to track the journey of their raw materials from origin to finished product.

Today’s consumers are increasingly aware, informed, and attentive, showing greater responsibility and concern for environmental issues.

PEFC certification ensures that timber comes from sustainably and responsibly managed forests, and remains traceable throughout the production and sales process. The product can only display the relevant quality certification when this chain of custody is upheld."Forest management certification" refers to an established and credible assessment process, conducted by an independent body, confirming that the forestry management practices meet defined "sustainability" criteria. A fundamental problem in the application of eco-certification systems is precisely the definition of "sustainable forest management" criteria and indicators, or rather the quantitative and qualitative parameters that allow the environmental performance and sustainability of forest management systems to be periodically evaluated. In particular, PEFC certification ensures "the management and use of forests and forest lands in ways and at rates that maintain biodiversity, productivity, regeneration capacity, vitality, and potential to fulfil ecological, economic, and social functions, now and in the future, at all levels, without harming other ecosystems."

THE CRITERIA UPON WHICH PEFC CERTIFICATION IS BASED:

• Maintenance and proper development of forest resources and their role in the global carbon cycle;
• Preservation of forest ecosystem health and vitality;
• Maintenance and promotion of the productive functions of forests, both wood and non-wood;
• Conservation, maintenance and enhancement of biological diversity within forest ecosystems;
• Maintenance and development of protective functions in forest management, particularly soil and water;
• Maintenance other socio-economic functions and conditions.

Holzhof is able to provide products made with PEFC-certified timber upon request.
